My Message to You

Why I think Management 3.0 is a great framework

Management 3.0 is designed to take you beyond theories and styles and help you take action to lead your team. Your organization will see greater productivity, success, and happiness with it. Keep reading to learn more about leadership principles and practices. To help you understand what management 3.0 is, let's take a closer look at the other two management principles and why those don't work.

First, you have what we call management 1.0. Managers who treated businesses like machines created this type of management style. They believed that individual parts needed to be repaired or replaced to keep them running. While this monitoring control style may have worked in the 20th century, it simply doesn't work today with a new generation of workers that think differently than the previous one.

Next, you have management 2.0. Management 2.0 focuses on people and expects managers to be servant leaders. However, many people in management abuse their power and don't give as much responsibility to their team as they should.  It's hard for managers to let go of their power and entrust their workers with the responsibility to produce.  Yet, this very act allows the manager to transcend management and become a true leader.

Today, we're seeing individuals adopt a management 3.0 approach to business. When we get to management 3.0, we stay far away from organizations being machines and take the focus off of managers, giving responsibility to all team members. In Management 3.0, managers are truly servant leaders entrusting the workers to lead their work.

Essentially, it's thinking about the company as a community where members are equally important and need to pull their own weight. Managers are put in place to create an environment where this can happen naturally.

Although we already touched on a couple of these, let's dig deeper into some of the main principles of management 3.0, so you can understand how and why it works so well.

First, there's the principle that everyone is a leader. When everybody is considered a leader, this puts the responsibility for the company's success on everyone rather than only those in management. This drives team members to work hard to build the company rather than look out for themselves.

A second principle is that managers should manage and improve the environment rather than the people. It's about creating an environment in which people naturally take more responsibility.

A third principle is about making employees happy. Happy employees work harder and are more productive, leading to happy customers. Happy customers are more engaged, buy more and engage more. They become evangelists and share your products with others.

Finally, management 3.0 is about helping avoid the pitfalls of managers having power trips. It puts everybody on the same level as coworkers working towards a common goal. As such, there are ample opportunities for everyone to provide feedback and co-create company behavior that drives success.

What are the benefits? Consider the fact that it applies to any current system or industry. Likewise, it's designed to work with all types of people to encourage them to become leaders for all of their coworkers.

What other benefits would you see with management 3.0? There's a natural boost in productivity because everyone pulls their weight, takes responsibility, and fulfills their role. You'll see innovation go up since it encourages creativity and the sharing of new ideas. You also get the benefit of management 3.0 shaping the company culture into a positive, more flexible work environment, happier employees, and all-around happier customers, simply because everyone is engaged, doing well, and getting things done.

Now you know what management 3.0 is. As you can see, it's engaging and helps all team members take responsibility for the business's success. This creates a better environment for everyone involved.

We look forward to seeing you in our Leadership accelerator program, where you will learn how to apply these principles in your workplace.
