Stop Lecturing. Start Teaching So People Actually Learn.

Leaders teach constantly — onboarding, process walkthroughs, training sessions, knowledge shares. But here's what usually happens: you open a slide deck, talk for 40 minutes, ask "any questions?" and move on. Sound familiar?

It's not your fault. Nobody taught you how to teach. The Team Teaching Assessment Rubric gives you a professional framework for designing and delivering training that people actually learn from.

It's built on Sharon Bowman's 4Cs Model from Training from the Back of the Room (Connection → Concept → Concrete Practice → Conclusion), Bernice McCarthy's 4MAT System addressing four learning styles (Why? What? How? What If?), and Bowman's Six Learning Principles backed by brain science: movement, talking, images, writing, shorter segments, and varied activities.

What it covers:

  • Connection Design & Execution — Activating prior knowledge, creating curiosity, and answering "Why should I care?" before you teach anything
  • Concept Introduction — Learner-constructed understanding, targeting a 70/30 ratio of learner activity to trainer talking — even during concept delivery
  • Concrete Practice Design — Real skill practice with progressive difficulty, immediate feedback, and the shift from teaching to facilitating
  • Conclusion & Integration — Learner-generated summaries, specific action commitments, and exploration of "What if I adapted this?"
  • Teaching Presence & Facilitation — Confidence, pacing, inclusivity, clear instructions, and knowing when to shift from teaching stance to coaching

The core principle: The learner — not the teacher — is the center of the learning experience.

How it works:

Each competency is scored 1–10 with specific observable behaviors. The rubric tracks your activity ratio (learner doing vs. you talking), 4Cs phase completion, and 4MAT cycle coverage. Development recommendations at every score range ensure continuous growth.

This rubric is used in our Team Coaching & Facilitation cohort, where participants design and deliver teaching sessions assessed on all five competencies with detailed feedback.

Download the rubric below, and you'll also receive instruction on how to use it to improve your Teaching Practice.
